Calling all students and parents!

The AMA Baltimore is proud to announce that we are now accepting applications for its 2012 Undergraduate Marketing Education Scholarships, which will be awarded to three exceptional undergraduate students in marketing or a marketing-related degree program in Spring 2012.

For this year’s competition, we are pleased to offer a first place prize of $2,500 and two $500 Book Scholarships for runner-up winners.  We would appreciate it if you would announce the availability of these scholarship offerings in classes with students who will be juniors and seniors as of September 2011 (sophomores and juniors at present) and are pursuing a marketing or marketing-related major. Heck no. That’s the bad news. But here’s the good news: If you’ve been following my blog for the past few months you already took a lot of the preliminary steps: you created or reviewed your mission statement. You identified your target audience, studied your competition regarding their product or service, and examined the way they “talk” about their products/services. You have done self-examination to see where your brand is stronger than they are and how you can differentiate your organization from your competitors. You have also identified ways in which you can get your employees to become brand advocates. Read the rest of this entry »

Before you spend your entire holiday gift budget on the tower of confections, fruit basket or other artfully arranged goodies, consider that your clients, donors, customers, and vendors might appreciate a gift just as valuable: a personal thank you. Read the rest of this entry »

If you haven’t dipped your toes into the social media waters, it can be overwhelming at first. Confusing or frightening, to say the least. You shouldn’t create a Facebook, LinkedIn, or Twitter presence just because “everyone else is doing it.” That’s not going to cut it nor is it going to be of value.

Before you dive into the deep end and worry about drowning in social media, do yourself a favor (yes, you can thank me later) and answer the following questions:

  1. What are we trying to achieve through our social media activity?
  2. How do we measure our goals?
  3. Who is our audience?
  4. Have we started listening yet?

Perhaps you’re reading this blog post and getting hungry. There’s a new pizza place down the street which seems to be drawing quite a few customers. But how good is that pizza? You may be able to answer that question by going online and searching for reviews written by fellow consumers. Fortunately, you locate several reviews on the popular site, Yelp. You find a few more on Trip Advisor. So, did these reviews impact your purchase decision?

As a market researcher, I’ve been following consumer attitudes and behaviors relating to the adoption of technology for over 25 years. Recently, I’ve been curious how consumers are reacting to online reviews from other consumers, the degree to which they are purchasing online “daily deals”, and the extent to which they are engaging with companies, brands—or merchants, through social media. During the month of October it’s possible for me to support breast cancer awareness in the following ways: I could eat a pink bagel in the morning; style my pink hair extensions; whip up a batch of cookies using a pink Kitchen Aid; go target shooting with a pink-handled Smith & Wesson handgun; watch my favorite NFL team score a touchdown in pink apparel; and, finally end my day with a relaxing pink bubble bath along with a pink ribbon rubber duckie.  Like the rest of the world, I could literally be bathed in pink to demonstrate my support of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. More good news to share about the Baltimore Chapter!  Just last weekend (October 2 to be exact) the AMA Baltimore received National Honors from AMA’s Headquarters.

As you may know, each year, every chapter submits a Chapter Excellence Award (CEA) entry that summarizes the challenges and successes of their term. This year, Marci De Vries spearheaded the effort to craft our CEA entry as her last task of the president of the AMA Baltimore 2010-2011. The 175-page report (give or take a few pages) highlighted our 80% member satisfaction rating as well as major gains in membership and program attendance/sponsorship.

Our awards for Chapter year 2010-2011 include:

  • Chapter Excellence – LEADERSHIP
  • Merit Award – MEMBERSHIP

It is gratifying to receive these top honors from the American Marketing Association, and we look forward to the AMA Summit this spring where we will be honored and given an opportunity to share our pathway to success with the other chapters of the AMA.

To view the full list of winners, please click here.

Special thanks to Marci and Dov Hoffman, our VP of Memberships.  And congratulations to our 2010-2011 board and to all of the volunteers, members, and partners that made these awards possible for us. We are all in this together – so let’s celebrate!
