The most inexpensive and underutilized resource available to every business is one’s own ability to effectively communicate to those they interact with everyday to either begin new relationships , strengthen existing ones and/or continue to nurture and develop the trust that will lead to increased opportunities for success. We have this opportunity in all aspects of our lives but none as highly focused and available than that in a planned networking event itself.

However, the biggest issue with “networking” that repels people is not in the event itself, but in how they perceive those who attend.  Most importantly, it is the misconception of how they believe one is supposed to interact which is often the polar opposite of what it really takes to actually create the right opportunities. I posted an article on my Facebook Fan Page about how you can now opt out of receiving the yellow pages. I don’t know about you but as soon as I get mine they go straight to the recycle bin. What this says to me is the yellow pages as we know it is on its way out. With that said, now more importantly than ever, if you truly have a business (not a hobby) and want to be found you should have a website.

Your website is the hub for all your business online as well as some offline activity. For some strange reason we forget to promote our website address everywhere possible. Here are seven simple places to promote your website you may have forgotten about: Read the rest of this entry »

On January 12, 2011, the AMA Baltimore hosted a Non-Profit Roundtable & Luncheon sponsored by The Associated-Jewish Federation of Baltimore.  It was a cold crispy January afternoon.  Nonetheless, attendance was robust and the conversations… engaging, informative and allowed for new connections of professional colleagues and marketing expertise.  Attendees included several members of the local non-profit community; Catholic Relief Services, Maryland Food Bank, Success for All Foundation, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Maryland.

Here’s the first-hand account of AMA Baltimore member, Megan Cambell’s experience and take-aways from this roundtable event:

As a marketing professional working in higher education for more than a decade, I had participated in professional organizations and networking groups that were specialized for that specific market. Most recently I served as the marketing co-chair for their annual conference. Great right? Meeting people, making connections, building a network of working professionals within my industry. We’ve all seen him. He’s that guy, the pompous man at the dinner party who spends the evening bragging about himself and his accomplishments, rather than engaging others in conversation. By the end of the night, he’s alienated almost everyone at the party, and has left the other guests wondering, “Who invited that guy, anyway?”

Or maybe he’s the guy who shows up to the Chamber of Commerce socials – shoves a business card in your hand before you can even put your drink down  - and explains why your business can’t live without his.

With over millions of tweets, facebook posts, or other conversations going online  each day– how can a brand be sure not to be labeled “That Guy”?

This past week the Baltimore Chapter of the AMA continued their tradition of hosting an Annual Networking event. On Wednesday, September 15, a Wine Tasting and AMA Networking event took place as the region’s top marketing professionals gathered at one of the hottest wineries in town, Woodhall Vineyard and Wine Cellars. Professionals were able to discuss career advice, current trends in the world of marketing, while indulging in some of the finest wine. The event was sponsored by Capitol Communicator, which serves as a resource to the region’s communications community.

AMA Baltimore’s current theme for 2010 – 2011 is ENGAGE and this was a mutually beneficial experience for new members, current members, and potential members as all attendees were able to ENGAGE in meaningful conversations with one another. Following Bob Burg’s quote of “It isn’t just what you know, and it isn’t just who you know. It’s actually who you know, who knows you, and what you do for a living” all of the attendees were able to strengthen their personal network through forging new connections, tell their personal stories, and exchange valuable information about the respective offerings of their company.
