The Baltimore Chapter of the American Marketing Association is an entirely volunteer-run organization. Each quarter, the Chapter selects a Featured Volunteer in order to recognize the extraordinary effort of these hard-working and dedicated individuals. The Featured Volunteers are nominated and voted on by the Chapter’s Executive Board.
Nicole Haslip of the Marketing & Communications and Mentorship & Professional Development committees has been named the Featured Volunteer of Spring 2019. Nicole is the Marketing and Communications Manager in the space and defense division at Saft, an international manufacturer of advanced technology batteries for various industries including aerospace, marine and rail, telecoms, and more. Developing branding and messaging related to the products and leading marketing campaigns are essential to Nicole’s position. She works closely with engineers, sales, and operations to communicate complex concepts in a way that resonates with diverse audiences.
Nicole wanted to find a professional organization that would help her meet other Baltimore marketers and diversify her knowledge in the field. After learning more about AMA Baltimore, Nicole quickly found a multitude of ways to volunteer in which she could apply and build on her current skill set. Using her writing skills and ability to make content digestible to various audiences, Nicole began to interview local businesses and chapter members to develop content for the AMA Baltimore blog. Working on the Mentor Connections committee and assisting in the recruitment of mentees for the program helped Nicole meet a wide range of local marketers.
“Nicole has been instrumental in our Mentor Connections program and brings fresh, creative content ideas to the table,” said Brynn Devereaux, AMA Baltimore’s President-Elect and VP of Marketing & Communications. “Our organization serves marketers in many different industries, and her ability to create content that resonates with all marketers is invaluable to our chapter. Nicole is truly a team player and supportive of all of her fellow volunteers.”
Volunteering has allowed Nicole to gain experience executing a program that relies on membership and networking. By conducting interviews and writing articles on the challenges other businesses face, Nicole has gained a wider perspective of marketing as a whole and has found value in being involved in a local level. “I am very passionate about Baltimore, and AMA Baltimore has helped me find out firsthand all of the great marketing that is being done right here in our backyard.”
AMA Baltimore has been instrumental in Nicole’s professional development by connecting her with other marketers. “The organization facilitates a sense of community among Baltimore area communicators – we can all learn something from each other’s experiences. It has been a great avenue for creativity for me and a way to get myself out of my comfort zone. I’ve been exposed to some real grassroots marketing efforts through the Mentor Connections program using the resources we had on hand, and I am a better marketer because of it.”
